A More-or-Less Complete Map of Zethykala

Posted by Doug on September 23, 2009

So here it is—Zethykala.  It’s not as elaborate or detailed as some I’ve seen, but hey, it’s still a perfectly serviceable map.

Zethykala (work in progress)

So now I guess I’ll start giving a little detail about each of the named locations depicted. And I’ll be including some suggested IPA pronunciations for everything (because it really bugs me when someone makes up some ridiculous name and never gives any hint on how to pronounce it).

Zethykala: A Little Island in FantasyLand

Posted by Doug on September 22, 2009

Reading the post on fantasy cartography over at the D&D Take blog inspired me to try my hand at the art, and without any version of Campaign Cartographer at my disposal, I ended up having to do things the hard way: drawing it by hand with the GIMP.

Hitagi: The Build, After-Action Report

Posted by Doug on September 21, 2009

For some reason, I could not get the Asus motherboard’s audio working with Ubuntu 8.04 “Hardy”, despite all my efforts, so I decided to go ahead and put 9.04 “Jaunty” on Hitagi, and what do you know?  It works great now.  I would rather have had an OS that would be supported for longer (Jaunty will be supported through October 2010, while Hardy will be supported until April 2011), but then again, if it doesn’t work with my hardware, those extra six months of support don’t mean much.

Hitagi: The Build, Part II

Posted by Doug on September 19, 2009

All in all, putting Hitagi together was a lot easier than I expected.  Originally, I had planned to read all the printed materials that came with the various pieces of hardware that would constitute Hitagi, but that plan lasted until page 3 of the motherboard instructions.

Hitagi: The Build

Posted by Doug on September 12, 2009

I ordered the parts for Hitagi today from Newegg.  Here is the list of parts I’ll be using:

Processor: I didn’t go with the AMD Phenom II X4 955.  Instead I decided to save a little money (about $40) by going with the Phenom II X4 810, which is only a 2.6 GHz quad-core as opposed to the 955 (3.2 GHz).  I think the 810 will more than suffice for my purposes, given that Hitagi isn’t intended to be a gaming computer.

And I Name Her “Hitagi”

Posted by Doug on September 12, 2009

I’m planning on building a new computer.  If all goes well, it will be completed within the week.  I have decided to name the new computer “Hitagi”, after Senjōgahara Hitagi, the tsundere female lead from Bakemonogatari.

Ah, the newness of it all…

Posted by Doug on September 11, 2009

I’m not really sure what I’m going to do with this blog.  More than likely I’ll use it to talk about whatever project I’ve got going on at the time.  Or not.  As I said, I don’t know.  I’ll think of something.
